Eligibility
These membership requirements have been developed to ensure that Carquinez Village accepts members whom we have the capacity to serve.
- Applicants must be 60 years of age or older with one exception. In the case of a household membership, only the primary member must be 60 years of age or older.
- Applicants must live in Benicia or Vallejo or in the surrounding unincorporated area.
- Applicants must be ambulatory (with or without the use of a cane or walker). In terms of transportation services, individuals must be able to independently enter and leave a vehicle. We are unable to transport members who are reliant on wheelchairs. We are able to assist members in other ways such as doing errands, grocery shopping, gardening, home repairs, etc.
- The Village cannot serve members afflicted with memory, emotional, or mental health problem. Carquinez Village is not a medical organization and is, therefore, not equipped to provide medical support.
- In order to receive services, an individual must be able to follow our procedures. For example, an individual must be able to request a supportive service or register for an activity through the website or by telephone. In addition, it is expected that an individual will be able to engage as a member in a variety of ways such as taking action to cancel a ride when it is no longer needed, being ready for a ride that s/he has scheduled, etc.
- Our supportive services can only work when there is a clear understanding of procedures that are to be followed between, for example, the Carquinez Village volunteer providing a service and the member being served. Likewise, our programs and activities can only operate when all members understand and follow Village procedures and expectations. If an applicant lacks the ability to follow our procedures, we will be unable to provide these services.
- Verbal and physical abuse is unacceptable at Carquinez Village. Applicants who demonstrate any such behavior will not be accepted. (The membership of a member who demonstrates such behavior may be canceled.)
- Applicants must be willing to meet with a Carquinez Village representative in their home. Carquinez Village conducts a home visit to ensure that our volunteers will be able to safely carry out their duties in assisting each member. We are NOT interested in the neatness, décor, type of home, or anything of this sort. We only want to make certain that we can safely assist you.
- In general, applicants should anticipate two initial meetings with Carquinez Village representatives. The first meeting typically focuses on an explanation of the Village and its benefits. The second is more specific. It is devoted to understanding the individual’s interests and explaining how to access our benefits.
Carquinez Village does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, gender expression, national origin, disability, marital status, sexual orientation, or military status. All are welcome in our village!
Note: We regret that we cannot transport members in wheelchairs unless they are able to get in/out of the chair without assistance.
