Carquinez Village features a Great Courses educational video series all February called “An Armchair Travel Adventure in Lifelong Learning … World Heritage Sites.” There will be two educational films shown, followed by group discussions.

Todays destination: Samarkand. Journey to this icon of the Silk Road, one of the oldest and greatest cities of Central Asia; rich in historical and cultural treasures. Trace the history of this fascinating icon and the Islamic transformation of the region. Take in the splendor of Samarkand's monuments, highlighting the glorious Bibi Khanum mosque, the Gur-i Emir tomb, and the spectacular madrassahs of the Registan.

Destination: Virunga National Park Gorilla Sanctuary. Visit one of Africa's greatest national parks rich in large primates, biodiversity, dormant volcanoes, and ever-changing politics.  Take in the stunning beauty of Virunga's forests and ponder the poignant political situation in the region, as it affects thempark's future.
