Writing an Ethical Will

A New Zoom Offering by Carquinez Village
                                                      Judie Donaldson, Facilitator

Have you ever thought about the fact that the most significant gift that we give to our children –– or that we share others who are important in our life –– are our principles and our values?  Have you ever wished that you could have a conversation with a deceased member of your family –– a father, mother, grandparent or sibling –– to ask questions about important aspects of her or his life?  Often the formative and central parts of who we are not articulated except perhaps informally, and certainly not in a way that can be passed on through generations. These are among the kinds of things that can be addressed in an ethical will.
An ethical will is a tool that can be used to give clarity and permanence to who we are and what has guided our life. Think of it like this. In a legal will we bequeath our material items while in an ethical will we bequeath our principles and values. Recent research has shown that people are eager for this, that they treasure the gift of knowing all that was important to their loved one who has died.

In this “course,” we will each be developing an ethical will.  To do this, we will undertake a series of fun exercises designed to stimulate our thinking about what we might like to include in an ethical will. If you are interested in participating, you will obtain the most value by doing your best to attend all of the sessions. Each one will essentially be a building block to writing your ethical will. You’ll need to have a notebook or IPad to write in. (Don’t worry. No one needs to see what you’ve written––and you don’t need to be a writer to produce an ethical will!)

Session Dates and Times: Tuesdays, August 18, 25, September 1, 8, 15, 22––1:00 - 2:30 pm

To Register: Register online at www.carquinezvillage.org. Register for August 18 only. (Our system will accept this as registration for all six sessions.)
